Alaska Warmth and Kentucky Cool

We’ve all noticed the cooler weather in and around Bowling Green for the past couple of days. Is it colder everywhere in the US though? The answer is no! Temperatures are actually quite warm for this time of year in Alaska! High temperatures across portions of the interior of Alaska were warmer than temperatures seen across Kentucky yesterday. Check out these graphics below depicting the high temperatures across Kentucky vs high temperatures across Alaska.

As you can see, it seems that Alaska has stolen all of our warmth. They saw a widespread area of 70s across the state, whereas Kentucky saw highs in the upper 60s. That’s just not fair, although I kind of enjoy the cool weather.

So, what’s caused this warm up across Alaska and cool down across the US? The answer lies in the current location of the jet stream. There is a strong ridge noticed along the west coast of North America. This is allowing for warmer temperatures to spread northward into western Canada and even Alaska. However, there is a longwave trough located across the US, allowing for colder temperatures in the region.
