The United States will play Portugal in their second game of the World Cup this evening. The game is set to start at 5pm CST/6pm EST at Arena Amazônia in Manaus, Brazil. Manaus is located in north central Brazil and sits right along the Amazon River. Manaus is in the eastern time zone so the game will start at 6pm there.

Manaus experiences a different climate than Natal (where the U.S. defeated Ghana in their opening match) due to its location in the central part of the country.  Manaus sits in the heart of the rain forest and receives about 90 inches of rainfall annually.  Manaus experiences monsoons which means they have distinct wet and dry seasons.  The month of June is the beginning of the dry season.

Temperatures don’t fluctuate much throughout the year and dew points are also high year round which means it is always hot and muggy in Manaus.  The average high temperature for June is 88 degrees with an average low of 73 degrees.

The forecast for today’s game calls for hot and humid conditions, which will come with a side of a few thunderstorms.  High temperatures will range from the low to mid 80s by match time with dew points in the mid 70s.

Check out this map from the GFS showing predicted precipitable water values at 850mb tomorrow at 7pm local time.  Precipitable water values will be around 2 inches, which indicates a very moist air mass.  In short…the players will be battling more than just each other today.  It looks as though they’ll have to overcome a few weather elements as well.

The large amount of moisture in the air will aid in the development of pop-up showers and thunderstorms during the match.  Precipitation will not be widespread, but any areas caught under one of these storms could see brief heavy rainfall.  Storms should dissipate after nightfall as they lose some of the energy from daytime heating.  Here is the another image from the GFS model showing hit or miss showers and thunderstorms across the area at 7pm:

Overall, the forecast looks good for the game.  The game will not be a washout but there will be some isolated showers and storms around the area to watch out for, especially towards the beginning of the game.  The biggest issue for the players will be having to deal with the heat and humidity.
