Good afternoon, earlier today the NCDC (National Climatic Data Center) released some of their new data which now includes the month of May. Check out this map showing year-to-date statewide temperature ranks. Keep in mind these ranks only include the time period from 1895-present.
The general trend this year has been warmth across the west and cooler temperatures across the east. California is actually having its record warmest year-to-date so far. Currently Kentucky is having its 17th coolest year-to-date.
The NCDC also released precipitation data and here is a map showing year-to-date statewide precipitation ranks.
In general, the northern tier of states has been having a pretty wet year with a lack of precipitation over the southwest and south-central U.S. The southeast has been pretty wet but Kentucky is having a pretty average year in terms of precipitation. It will be interesting to see how these ranks change over the rest of the year.
