WKU Storm Chase Day 3

Good evening, we started our day out in Aurora, Colorado and headed south to our target in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Severe weather parameters were not as great as the past two days so originally we planned on today being more of a travel day to set ourselves up for the next few days, but we did manage to catch a few storms today.

After having lunch in Raton, New Mexico we headed east towards northwest Texas while some thunderstorm cells were popping up right over us. Check out this image of a thunderstorm right over the desert.

The rain shafts you see in the picture had a difficult time reaching the ground at first because the air was so dry but as the cells moved east into a more moist environment, heavy rain and hail became the dominant threats with the storms. We followed the storms into northwest Texas and got a glimpse of some great mammatus clouds.

The cells congealed into more of a cluster of storms as they made their way through the Texas panhandle but we did manage to catch a glimpse of a decent shelf cloud near Dalhart, Texas.

We are staying in Amarillo, Texas tonight and hope to head farther south tomorrow to catch some more storms. You can keep up with us by following @wkustormchase on Twitter.
