The forecast for the end of the work week certainly has some good news…as well as some bad news. Here is the good news: Temperatures will return to near normal and highs will be in the 60s on Thursday and Friday. The bad news: the warmer temperatures will bring us multiple chances for rain before the weekend.
Bummer
For today, clear skies will continue for the rest of the afternoon and high temperatures will reach the middle 40s. Winds will turn to the south this evening ahead of a low pressure system to our west. This will usher in some clouds tonight, and also keep temperatures warmer.
We usually see our lowest temperature right before sunrise, but tonight the low temperature will reach the middle 30s around midnight and actually increase a few degrees for the rest of the night as those southerly winds keep pushing in warmer air.

On Thursday, we will see those southerly winds really ramp up as the area of low pressure to our northwest gets closer. Check out the latest run of the GFS model showing the area of low pressure tomorrow evening.
The black lines are called isobars and wherever they are tightly packed together like what is shown here, it is a good indication of pretty strong winds in response to pressure differences.
What does this mean for tomorrow’s forecast? It will be very windy with southerly winds around 10-25 mph during the day and night. These winds will help temperatures to reach the lower 60s, but clouds will be moving in from the west as the low moves closer. Late tomorrow afternoon we will see a chance for some showers which will increase in coverage as the night goes on.
Thursday night will be very wet, as a cold front will spark widespread showers moving over Kentucky. These showers will have to potential to produce rainfall amounts of 0.5″-1″.
Fri – Scat’d Showers & Storms – High 68˚ / Fri Night – Scat’d Showers & Storms – Low 51˚
The cold front wont make much eastward progress on Friday and as a result the wet weather will continue. Southerly winds will continue to keep temperatures mild, with scattered showers and storms possible during the day. A better chance at rain will arrive Friday night, as another area of low pressure forms to our southwest and moves along the cold front.
Some of these thunderstorms could be on the strong side, with a few severe thunderstorms not out of the question. The SPC continues to place south Central Kentucky under a slight risk for severe weather on Friday, with the biggest threats being strong winds, frequent lightning, torrential rainfall, and hail.
By the time the rain finally moves out on Saturday, most of us will have picked up 1-2″ of rain from Thursday and Friday’s rain combined. Here is a map from the QPC showing total rainfall amounts from today until Saturday morning.
Luckily, things will quiet down after Saturday after a very active end to the work week.
