Monday Afternoon Update

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy & Cold – High 30˚ / Tonight – Partly Cloudy & Cold – Low 25˚

6pm 27˚ ~ 9pm 27˚ ~ 12am 24˚ ~ 3am 25˚ ~ 6am 28˚

Cloud cover will remain intact through the remainder of the afternoon, which we should eventually see break up as we get into tonight.  We may be able to squeeze a few rays of sunshine in before sunset.  This will be thanks to an area of high pressure tracking along to our north.  Here’s a look at the current setup:

Surface Mode Valid 3pm 2/3/14

Tues – Rain Likely – High 39˚ / Tues Night – Scat’d Rain & Sleet – Low 31˚

A low pressure system will advance northeast through Tennessee, toward the Appalachians.  Moisture will stream northeast across our proximity as a result, setting up a very damp Tuesday.  Widespread rain showers will take over southwest to northeast across south central Kentucky during the afternoon.

Overnight, temperature profiles will flirt with the freezing threshold, as plentiful amounts of moisture remain intact over our proximity.  This could result in a wintry mix of rain and sleet.

I’m not expecting this event to produce much in the way of accumulations, however, a light dusting can’t be ruled out.  Overall, confidence is that we won’t see much of anything gather on the ground.  The GFS Precip loop below gives you a better idea of how this weather maker may evolve.  It’s valid from 6am Tues – 6am Wed in 6-hour increments:

GFS Precip Loop Valid 6am Tues - 6am Wed
GFS Precip Loop Valid 6am Tues – 6am Wed

If you are traveling tomorrow afternoon – night, pay attention to ponding on roadways, as heavy rain could supplement this hazard.  Total rainfall values from this event are expected to range from 1-2+”.

Wed – Cloudy – High 34˚ / Wed Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 21˚

High pressure will be slow to move into the region on Hump Day, which should keep cloud cover around.  As high pressure eventually takes over Wednesday night, clouds should break up to an extent, allowing for lows to tumble to near 20˚.

Our next weather maker looks to arrive on Friday, with a bit of snow looking possible Friday night – Saturday.  As I mentioned in the morning forecast, we’re still a bit far out for this one, so I’ll avoid any more details until we get closer to time.

That’s all I’ve got for now, folks.  Stay connected with @WarrenCountyWx & @Wx_Or_Not for more frequent information.  Enjoy what’s left of your Monday, and thanks for reading.
