Another Storm To Watch

We just want snow.  I mean, really…is that too much to ask?

Today 2/3 – Gradual Clearing – High 36˚ / Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low 26˚

6am 28˚ ~ 9am 32˚ ~ 12pm 35˚ ~ 3pm 36˚ ~ 6pm 31˚ ~ 9pm 26˚

Judging from reports I received from across our region, the forecast for last night verified.  I’ve received several reports of a dusting in Warren, Allen and Barren counties, with higher totals of 1-3″ from locations to the north and west in Butler and Edmonson County.  Many roads are still slick, however, we should see improvement shortly.

Our weather today should gradually take a turn for the better with time, as temperature values rebound a few degrees above freezing.  High pressure rolling by to our north should allow for a few rays of sun this afternoon, with partly cloudy skies expected overnight.  Here’s a look at the current surface setup:

Tues – Rain Likely – High 42˚ / Tues Night – Wintry Mix Likely – Low 30˚

Cloud cover will increase throughout our Tuesday, with moisture streaming into south central Kentucky from the southwest.  This will be in response to a low pressure system advancing northeast across the Tennessee Valley.

With plenty of forcing available, widespread rain showers will take over during the afternoon, and hang around as we get into the night.  Rain should be isolated to scattered in nature tomorrow morning.  A rain boot warning has been issued for WKU students.

As cold air sweeps in behind the low  Tuesday night, a wintry mix of rain and sleet will be possible.  Once again, temperature values will dance right around the freezing mark, which should prevent any major accumulations.  At best, a spotty dusting – 1″ looks possible.  I really don’t think we’ll see much of anything.  I will continue to monitor the latest data for any changes.

 This looks like another event where the milk & bread man will escape unscathed.  Rainfall amounts through this time will be of concern, potentially topping 1-2″, as illustrated by the GFS precip model below.  It is valid through 6am Wednesday:

Wed – AM Wintry Mix – High 34˚ / Wed Night – Mostly Cloudy – Low 21˚

What’s left over of the wintry mix should dissipate and quickly transition to cloudy skies by mid morning.  Cloud cover will hang around, but should break up throughout Wednesday night, as high pressure takes over the region.

Our weather looks to remain stagnant through Thursday, with a series of potential winter weather reentering the fold through the weekend.  Several questions remain in place regarding these setups, so I’ll be waiting a few more days before diving into any details.
