Wintry Mix Possible Tonight

My first thought after titling this post.  #PanicMode

Today 1/14 – AM Fog; Scat’d PM Showers; Breezy – High 54˚ / Tonight – Scat’d Rain/Snow Showers – Low 26˚

6am 34˚ ~ 9am 40˚ ~ 12pm 52˚ ~ 3pm 54˚ ~ 6pm 44˚ ~ 9pm 37˚

A few areas of freezing fog has made for slick conditions across the region.  Be careful on the morning commute.  Sunshine will be with us early, before our next disturbance begins to impact the area.  Surface low pressure will propagate east across the Great Lakes today, dragging a trailing cold front southeast across the Bowling Green viewing area.

This type of event is referred to as a clipper system.  In response to the approaching front, cloud cover and southwesterly winds (10-20mph) will increase over our proximity.  Isolated/scattered showers could arrive as early as this afternoon.  Here’s a look at current surface conditions:

Surface Model Valid 6am Tuesday
Surface Model Valid 6am Tuesday

As the cold front passes to our south, temp values will quickly fall.  Combine this thinking with given parameters aligning behind the boundary, and we could be looking at a transition to a scattered wintry mix of precipitation before midnight.

The GFS precip loop below is valid from 12pm this afternoon through 12pm Wednesday in 6 hour increments.  This should provide a better illustration of how this weather maker may evolve:

GFS Precip Loop Valid 12pm Tues - 12pm Wed
GFS Precip Loop Valid 12pm Tues – 12pm Wed

Wed – Iso’d AM Snow Showers, Breezy – High 32˚ / Wed Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 21˚

Lingering snow showers will continue into the early morning hours of our Wed, which are expected to taper off shortly after sunrise.  As far as accumulations are concerned, I don’t believe we’re looking at much of anything.  A few locations may squeeze out a dusting , but it’s not likely.

Traveling may become a concern for the morning commute, as temperature values in the early morning are forecast to range in the mid – upper 20s.  Winds sweeping in from the northwest at 10-20mph will limit highs to the lower 30s.  BRRRR!  Ridging will take over Wed night, giving us partly cloudy skies.

Thu – Partly Cloudy, Breezy – Low 43˚ / Thu Night – Scat’d Snow Showers – Low 25˚

Another low pressure system will dive eastward across the upper Ohio Valley/Great Lakes on Thu, which will swing another cold front across south central Kentucky.  Available parameters will once again reintroduce scattered snow showers to the forecast Thursday night into Friday.  Accumulations look to remain light, if any at all.  I’ll hold off on mentioning anything with this particular system until tomorrow.

That’s all I’m made of.  For more frequent updates, stay connected with me @Wx_Or_Not.  Enjoy your Tuesday, and thanks for reading.
