Sunday Afternoon Update

Sunday afternoon means tomorrow is another Monday… and a rainy one at that.

This Afternoon – Sunny – High 52˚ / Tonight – Increasing Clouds – Low 42˚

6pm 48˚ ~ 9pm 45˚ ~ 12am 43˚ ~ 3am 44˚ ~ 6am 45˚

The weather has been nothing short of great as we rose to temperatures in the mid-50s under sunny skies. Not a cloud in the sky. That trend will not continue however as system currently located over the southern Great Plains moves eastward. For tonight this will only cause an increase in cloudiness, especially after midnight. The cloud cover and continued southerly winds will help keep temperatures up overnight.

Mon – Scad’t Showers, Breezy – High 53˚ / Mon Night – Becoming Clear – Low 32˚

Scattered showers could move into south-central Kentucky as early around 6am with showers continuing off-and-on throughout the day into the late afternoon/early evening hours. All day rain sure sounds like alot, but in reality the scattered nature of the showers will result in most locations receiving around .50-1″. Lighter amounts will be in the Ohio to Muhlenberg County region with the highest amounts down toward Allen County. Meanwhile southwest winds from 10-20 mph will make it a little breezy, but also continue to bring in warm air allowing temperatures to again climb to the low to mid 50s.

A weak cold frontal boundary (as depicted above) will sweep through during early evening hours which will push all the showers out along with it. The front will also bring in cooler and drier air behind it. This will allow clouds to clear early on, with mostly clear skies after 10pm. Temperatures will fall into the low 30s by morning.

Tues – AM Sun/PM Clouds, Showers to Wintry Mix – High 53˚/ Tues Night – Wintry Mix to Light Snow – Low 27˚

Tuesday will start off nice. Breezy (10-20 mph) southwest winds bring in warmer air while skies will be mostly sunny. Temperatures are expected to again return to the low to mid 50s by the afternoon. Another disturbance, this time a clipper system, will move to our north through the Great Lakes Region by Tuesday afternoon into the overnight hours. Thus clouds will increase by the afternoon and some light precipitation is possible.

First off I should say precipitation is expected be very light so there is no need to panic when I mention “wintry mix” and “snow”. It does seem quite possible that some widely scattered showers could move in the region by mid to late afternoon. Despite warm temperatures to start, it is expected to transition to a wintry mix. Wintry precipitation is possible thanks to very dry air which will allow temperatures to cool by evaporative cooling and more cold air filtering in during the afternoon/evening hours as well. Rain will probably first mix with sleet and eventually a mix of rain, sleet and snow is possible before a transition to scattered light snow showers overnight. At this time any accumulation will be minor if there is any accumulation at all because precipitation will remain light and widely scattered. Learn more about evaporative cooling and wintry precipitation types here.

Temperatures will drop through the evening and overnight Tuesday reaching the upper 20s by Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be cold Wednesday as we may struggle to get above freezing.

That is all for now, enjoy one last pleasant evening before the disturbed weather moves in early this week. Landon will be back to provide the forecasts throughout the week starting tomorrow morning and he will keep you up to date with all our upcoming precipitation chances.
