Weathering The Cold #PunIntended

One more day to BUNDLE UP!

Today 1/7 – Sunny & COLD – High 19˚ / Tonight – Clear – Low 14˚

7am2˚ ~ 9am 5˚ ~ 12pm 13˚ ~ 3pm 17˚ ~ 6pm 15˚ ~ 9pm 15˚

High pressure will build into south central Kentucky from the south, which should provide partly to mostly sunny skies across the region today.  The unforgiving cold will still hang around, with wind chills hanging around -5 to -10˚ this morning.

The good news is that we’ll see winds shift from out of the southwest…a sign that warmer air is on the way.  We can thank the high pressure’s clockwise rotation for this shift.  Tonight, will be clear and cold.  Below is a look at current surface conditions:

Wed – Partly Sunny – High 39˚ / Wed Night – Increasing Clouds – Low 25˚

Southerly winds of 10mph will continue to pump MUCH warmer air into the region, which will result in a warm up of 10-20˚ compared to what we’ll experience today.  Wednesday night, cloud coverage will begin to increase, as moisture is filtered across the area ahead of our next weather maker.

Thu – Scat’d Rain/Snow Showers – High 44˚ / Thu Night – Scat’d Showers – Low 33˚

Temperature profiles continue to be a struggle to pin down regarding Thursday morning’s potential for a light, wintry mix of precipitation.  I expect temp values to quickly climb after daylight arrives, however, depleted moisture along a surface boundary to our northwest could help create a bit of frozen precip.

A few scattered rain/snow showers aren’t out of the question early.  I’m not really concerned about any traveling impacts, as this should be a very minor event…if any frozen precip even makes it to the ground, that is.

If we do see frozen precip, expect a quick transition to scattered rain by mid morning.

We’ll keep scattered showers in the forecast on Thursday night, as an upper level trough approaches from the west.  This will result in widespread rain showers on Friday, with rainfall values of up to 1″ not out of the question.  The good news?  Our warming trend will continue.  Check out the temperature model loop below, which is valid 6am Wednesday – 6pm Friday.  That’s what we like to see:
