SNOW!?!  Don’t panic.  I repeat…DON’T PANIC!

Today 1/1 – Sunny – High 48˚ / Tonight – Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low 34˚

9am 35˚ ~ 12pm 46˚ ~ 3pm 47˚ ~ 6pm 38˚ ~ 9pm 37˚

Stationary front is located just to our north, which has kept south central Kentucky in the warm sector of this system.  Light southerly winds will combine with rays of sunshine to take temps to around the 50˚ mark today.  Here’s a look at the current surface conditions:

Overnight, a low pressure system will track northeast out of Texas toward our proximity.  In response to this, available moisture will coincide with fluctuating temp profiles to spawn off scattered rain & snow showers tonight.  I’m not expecting much of anything, as temps look to hover just above freezing.

Thu – Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – High 34˚ / Thu Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 15˚

Tonight’s low temperature will be Thursday’s high.  The low pressure system that tracked out of northern Texas will cut a path northeast across south central Kentucky tomorrow morning.  This will keep scattered rain and snow in the forecast.

The real question that will determine accumulation amounts will be how long it takes to low to pass to our east.  As this occurs, brisk, northwesterly winds will send temperatures plummeting, which will cause a transitional period to all snow.  The GFS loop below displays the expected track of the low, along with what type of precipitation we can expect:

As far as accumulations are concerned, I’m not expecting anything impressive.  After analyzing the latest soundings and ensembles, it looks like we could see anywhere from a sporadic dusting up to 1″ of the white stuff for a few lucky folks.  In other words…no need to hijack any milk trucks.  Those located along the Ohio River could see up to 2″.

It is worth noting that with temps falling below freezing, slick spots will be inevitable.  By tomorrow night, expect gradual clearing, as the weather maker works to our east.

Fri – Sunny & COLD – High 28˚ / Fri Night – Clear – Low 23˚

Very cold high pressure will take over behind this system, allowing rays of sunshine to reclaim the skies.  Don’t let the sun deceive you, as temperature values will be bitterly cold, with wind chills in the teens.  All will remain nice, cool and quiet until we get into Sunday, when another round of winter looks to be on the agenda.

That’s all I’ve got, folks.  Stay in touch with me @Wx_Or_Not to stay up to date with the latest.  Have a great start to the new year.  If you’re a snow lover like me, keep those fingers crossed!
