Colder Conditions Arrive

Another short work week calls for another celebration…

Mon – Gradual Clearing, COLD – High 34˚ / Mon Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 18˚

6am 25˚ ~ 9am 27˚ ~ 12pm 30˚ ~ 3pm 33˚ ~ 6pm 27˚ ~ 9pm 24˚

Cold air will continue to advect into south central Kentucky today, giving us bitter conditions to kick off the work week.  A few flurries will be possible this morning, with clouds breaking up as the day progresses.  High pressure has started to build in behind the cold front that passed to our east last night, which will produce northwesterly winds of 5-10mph.

This will help create a – 20˚ temperature difference compared to yesterday.  The surface model provided helps illustrate what’s going on:

New Year’s Eve – Sunny – High 44˚ / Tues Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 25˚

Warm front will approach from our southwest, however, moisture should not be a factor.  We will enter the warm sector as this boundary works to our north, where southerly winds will send temperatures rebounding into the mid 40s.  Other than that, high pressure will keep sunny, quiet conditions around.  The following diagram should help you understand the warm sector:

New Year’s Day – Sunny & Warmer – High 49˚ / Wed Night – Scat’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low 32˚

Plentiful amounts of sunshine should be available to bring in the first day of the new year.  As the warm front continues to track to our north, southerly winds will continue to advect a warmer airmass into south central Kentucky.  The real fun will begin to take shape Wednesday night, as a cold front approaches the area from the northwest.

Several questions remain regarding what type and how much precipitation will impact the area.  With temperatures flirting with the freezing threshold, we could see a mixed bag of the wintry stuff falling from the sky.  With that being said, models are in disagreement of what exactly will occur with this weather maker.  I’ll await a few more model runs before I dive any deeper.

That will do it for the time being.  Have questions?  Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me @Wx_Or_Not.  Have a fantastic Monday, and thanks for reading.
