Statewide Ice Storm Will Have Significant Impacts

Good morning, everyone! Not expecting the title? If so, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Today’s post will be packed with information on the statewide ice storm that is to come as well as what impacts are to follow.

What to Prepare For

This morning, showers will begin to move into our area, remaining relatively scattered at first, then becoming widespread. As far as rainfall totals go, these may produce only up to 0.2 inches. At most, you may have to use those windshield wipers to rid of some sprinkles on your way to work.

This evening, as temperatures drop to below freezing values, the precipitation type will transition from rain to freezing rain. This ice storm will be widespread, impacting every county within our community, and sticking around until tomorrow afternoon. As of now, anticipated ice totals are 0.25 to 0.50 inches.

Our main threats include tree damage and power outages. If you haven’t already, we encourage for you to prepare for a period of time without power. There is no way of predicting how long these power outages may last, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

According to the National Weather Service, “travel could be near impossible“. If you can, try and stay in as much as you can for your own safety. We understand that this is not always an option, so if you travel to your workplace, make sure you take your time and drive slowly.

If you do go outdoors, be sure to layer up, as temperature and wind chill values will remain below freezing for the entirety of this icing event. Today, temperatures will reach the upper 30’s and drop to the lower 30’s. Tomorrow, the high and low will be not vary much at all, both being in the lower 30’s.
