Heat Continues, but Relief is Coming

Good Sunday morning, folks! Hope we’re all having a fantastic weekend thus far. It has been really hot the past couple days. Looking ahead, the heat continues, but relief is coming.

Intense Heat Continues

Yesterday was specifically heat filled, and I am expecting today and tomorrow at least to be in a similar vein to that.

We’re not under a particularly strong high pressure system or anything, but we are having a lack of afternoon storms at all to keep us a bit cooler than we may otherwise end up.

The combination of mid 90s and dewpoints in the mid and upper 60s this afternoon will put heat index values around 100ºF. Be sure to take frequent breaks and stay hydrated out there.

Monday may be even hotter as southwesterly flow draws plentiful moisture up into the lower Ohio valley. Highs will be in the mid 70s, but dewpoints will jump into the low and mid 70s.

Heat index values will likely approach and exceed 100ºF tomorrow afternoon. The one silver lining is that isolated storms are again possible tomorrow afternoon as a weak cold front meanders through the central Ohio Valley.

These won’t be too widespread, so don’t expect it to cool you off too much.

Storm Chances Increase Tuesday and Wednesday

A much stronger cold front will begin approaching the region from the north and west, and will help to bring an increased chance of storms to the region.

Tuesday will be hot again. If you are shocked about that, I’m not sure what to tell you. It has been hot for what feels like forever.

Expect highs at least in the lower 90s, depending on when storms decide to form. There is some uncertainty on storm arrival and timing. Some models have scattered storms in the afternoon, while some indicate the possibility of a complex of storms in the evening.

The NAM model is showing the possibility of that complex. Not all models have this, but the set up makes sense for something like this. h/t COD Weather

At this point, just know that storms are expected once we get into the evening hours. Lightning, heavy rain, and some isolated strong wind gusts are the main threats.

Wednesday looks to be similar temperature wise. Highs in the lower 90s with dewpoints running in the upper 70s. That will create some of the more intense heat of this stretch if it verifies.

The aforementioned cold front will begin marching towards us during the afternoon hours, and should help to force widespread storms across the region.

It wouldn’t surprised me to see a strong storm or two across the region, either. The main threats would be heavy rain and damaging winds. Heavy rainfall, as always, will be a threat as well.

Post cold front passage should bring relatively pleasant weather for the late week! Looking like highs in the low and mid 80s, with dewpoints dropping into the low 60s.
