Soggy New Years Celebrations in the Forecast

Good morning, folks! Thanks for joining us this morning. If you are like me, it is a drowsy morning after a night of watching some non-competitive college football! Oh well.

New Years Eve is tomorrow, and we are expecting some soggy New Years celebrations in the forecast.

Cloudy and Gloomy Sunday

Well, as you’re heading outside this morning, you will notice something similar. It is cloudy again, for what feels like the thousandth day this month with clouds.

This is in response to strong southwesterly flow in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. As a result, moisture is being transported here from the Tropical Pacific. Seriously!

Thus, copious cloud cover has developed across the region. High temperatures will not move much today, only rising into the lower 50s under increasing clouds.

Heavy Rain, Storms, and Windy Tonight and NYE

Tell me if you’ve heard that one before?

In response to strong lift in the atmosphere, an intense surface low will develop to our west tomorrow. Ahead of this, heavy rainfall is expected to develop tonight and last through tomorrow morning.

This is along and ahead of the developing surface warm front, and should put down a decent bit of water. Expect between 0.5″ and 1″ of rain with that first wave. As always, #AvoidFairview.

After this, the warm front surges to our north during the day on Monday. You don’t want to see breaks in the cloud cover, but I am expecting some breaks in the clouds to develop during the morning and early afternoon.

In association with this will be an intense pressure gradient, and this will kick of south and southwesterly flow during the day. Expect wind gusts upwards of 40 and maybe 45 mph. This can easily knock down a tree or two with as saturated as our soil is.

This wind will pump up our New Year’s Eve temps. Highs tomorrow are looking to jump into the upper 60s and lower 70s.

And this is why you don’t want to see sunshine. As the afternoon progresses, a stout cold front will force a squall line along it that will quickly move into our region. With such strong winds in the lower atmosphere, this could be severe.

The SPC currently has much of the region in a Marginal Risk (2/5), but that could change. The line should move through between 2 and 5 pm tomorrow. Be sure to follow @wxornotBG to stay up to date with the potential line of storms.

After the front comes through, temperatures will fall back to reality.

Much Colder New Year’s Day

The temperatures look like they’ll pretty much fall continuously from the time the cold front passes through Tuesday evening.

It may get cold to start the new year, but HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It will definitely make you appreciate Monday’s weather, but it won’t be that bad. Clouds should continue to hang tough across the region, helping to keep highs in the lower 40s during the afternoon.

This cold will continue to filter in, with temperatures ending up in the mid 30s for Wednesday and Thursday. This is a time period to keep an eye on, as we could have some…interesting weather associated with it.
