Winter Storm #2 Winding Down

Winter Storm WARNING Continues

Posted by Landon Hampton on Tuesday, 16 January 2018

It’s a cold, snowy morning as yet another winter storm in 2018 rages on. The backside of the snow should begin working through the region over the next few hours. Temperatures are currently 11° with a wind chill below zero. Radar image valid at 5:56 AM.

A reminder that a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until noon today for Warren, Simpson, Logan, Butler, and Edmonson Counties. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until noon today for Barren and Allen Counties.  Bowling Green has picked up around 3″ of new snow. An additional inch or two is possible before the backside moves on through.

We’ll remain very cold today. Highs will only top out around 14°. Northwest winds around 10 mph will make it feel below zero for most of the day.

Given the extreme cold expected overnight tonight, it will not take much moisture at all for a few flakes to fall. Thus, a chance of light snow showers or flurries will be possible overnight. Lows will drop into the low single digits and may even approach, or go below zero. The current HRRR model says we may drop to zero by 10 PM!

Isolated snow showers or flurries may continue into Wednesday morning. Another cold day is expected with little to no melting of the new snow in your yard. Afternoon highs will top out around 22° despite mostly sunny skies. A light northwest wind will make it feel colder.

Single digit temperatures are once again forecast Wednesday night and Thursday morning. It’ll be interesting to see the new models come in since they’ll initialize with the new snowpack. This may mean we need to adjust temperatures lower. Time will tell.

Southerly flow will work into the region on Thursday  thanks to high pressure moving south of the region. This will help temperatures rebound above freezing by the time the afternoon rolls around. This will begin melting snow and thawing out the region. Mostly sunny skies will also certainly help!

Temperatures Thursday night and Friday morning will once again drop well below freezing. As of now, upper teens are forecast, which will re-freeze any residual moisture on the roads, so watch for slick spots Friday morning. I’m not okay with all this cold weather.
