Forecast Discussion

Subtle ridging today will give way to a longwave trough moving in this evening and into the rest of the forecast period. This will lead to a wet evening and overnight, followed by cooler temperatures.

While we’ve enjoyed the relatively warm weather, today may be the last day to enjoy it again for the rest of the week. A small ridge will move into the region today, leading to warming conditions. I expect high temperatures to top out around the mid 50s. Conditions will be mostly sunny to start the day, with clouds developing later thanks to an approaching trough.

The trough will overspread divergence aloft into the region, leading to the formation of numerous showers across the region tonight. Generally, up to a tenth of an inch to perhaps half an inch of rain is expected. Lows will be in the upper 30s to low 40s across the area.

On Thursday, a cold front will have pushed through the region. Thus, fair conditions are expected under stout northwest flow aloft. This will kick temperatures back quite a bit. Despite sunny skies, highs will likely be a little chilly in the mid 40s, especially when combined with winds in excess of 20 to 30 mph. Mostly clear conditions overnight will lead to lows dropping into the low 30s.

Northwest flow aloft will continue on Friday. This will once again keep temperatures cool despite mostly sunny skies. Highs should top out around 40°F. Once again, strong winds will make it feel a bit colder. Partly cloudy skies may develop overnight with lows in the low 30s once again.

Looking Ahead

The forecast for this New Year’s weekend is looking a bit wet. Look for isolated to scattered showers on both Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures will also be confined to the low 40s for the weekend, followed by a milder start to the following work week!
