IBM to Acquire Weather Co.’s Digital Assets

International Business Machines (IBM) announced early Wednesday that it has agreed to acquire the Weather Company’s data and digital assets. These assets will not include the Weather Channel, but IBM will acquire the Weather Co.’s mobile and cloud-based web properties including WSI, weather.com, Weather Underground, and The Weather Company Brand (CNBC).

The Weather Company’s app is the fourth most-used app daily in the U.S., handling 26 million inquiries each day (CNBC). According to USA Today, this deal will allow for the marketing of cloud-based weather information to business partners and local governments.

The partnership plans to develop and sell weather analytics tools to help local governments and businesses predict and plan for natural disasters and other weather-related events. The weather information is available to users of IBM’s cloud app platforms.
