On This Day In History: Hurricane Katrina Is A Category 5

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the havoc and destruction that Hurricane Katrina wreaked on the Gulf Coast in 2005. Katrina began as a weak tropical depression in the Bahamas, but rapidly intensified into a Category 1 hurricane right before landfall around Miami, Florida.

As it emerged into the Gulf Of Mexico, it began to rapidly intensify as it encountered a favorable wind shear and surface temperature environment. It intensified all the way down to 902 mb, with 175 mph sustained winds at the surface.

Katrina was an incredible storm, and at one point, hurricane force winds extended 172 miles from the center, which is absolutely absurd. Katrina was forecasted to make landfall as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane on August 29th, 2005, and devastating impacts were forecasted to occur. Many in the region were calloused from previous busted forecasts, so people weren’t evacuating the way they should have. This lead to the infamous “Doomsday Bulletin” from NWS New Orleans. They had no idea how accurate their words were…
