While March may not be over, I don’t care. I can give you a good bet on how the end of this month looks (hint: not fun). I tend to write about things that haven’t even happened or ended yet. After all, I do forecast the weather, which is completely based in the future.
Despite that, I decided I wanted to give the November 2014 to March 2015 a good review. This timespan can be played in my head like a movie because it has been just so weird. I mean, its been really weird. There are months that can be very active (April 2011, March 2012, February 2015) and months that can be monotonous (generally June and July of every year), but I haven’t really seen a period in which we have gone from really crazy, to boring, to kinda crazy, to cold, to mild and boring, to hyperactive, back to boring again. It is insane.
This time went from this…
To this…
And then to this…
I have been with WxOrNot since the beginning of November, and have been here for the weirdest stretch of weather ever. Here is what has occurred since then:
- The 4th coldest November on record across the state
- Heavy November snow to our north across the state
- The incredibly monotonous December
- The below-average precip through mid-February (who woulda thought?)
- The cool then mild then cold then mild January
- The hyperactivity from January 23rd through March 5th
- Ending with this….
- And the up and down in temps since then
This stretch would make a good movie. It really would. Now, I would be the only one to watch this movie, but still. If they did a weather 30 for 30, this stretch would be one of the best ones to talk about. It would surely get 5 stars.
But just think about this: We went from moderate drought and, “This summer could have a bad drought” to significant flooding in a matter of weeks. We went from 2 significant snowstorms since 2008 to 2 major storms in 3 weeks. We had the worst forecasting week imaginable, with temps going from -30 to 35 in 24 hours. We had headache after headache after seeing nothing for a solid 2 months.
You can imagine that this has been weird for all of us. The up and down nature made it that much more difficult. One day you think winter is over, and the next you are rushing to examine all of the data possible and put together one of the weirdest forecasts I have had to do.
All I will say is this: If we are to have a similar winter next year or sometime in the future, I just simply ask that the atmosphere not dump on us in the middle of the semester.
