Good Wednesday morning, Bowling Green! Today marks yet another snow day for students at WKU and many school systems across the region, as roads continue to pose major travel concerns. As the main band of snow moves out of the area this morning, much cooler air will be moving in. Reports from this morning’s disturbance have ranged from 1-2″ of additional accumulations. Talk about insult to injury!

The cold front that moved through the state earlier this morning (which is responsible for the snow showers) will allow frigid temperatures to filter in behind it throughout the day, with winds blowing at 10-20 mph by this afternoon. Wind gusts up to 30 mph are possible, causing wind chills to drop into the negative single digits.

Another disturbance will bring the possibility for snow squalls as we progress into the afternoon, with up to an inch of new accumulation possible. This, paired with gusty winds and tanking temperatures, will pose even more serious issues for travelers, as visibilities drop greatly and roadways become even more covered. Temperatures tonight will be absolutely FRIGID, with wind chills dropping into the negative 20s. Please exercise caution if you must go out and about today, and be sure to bundle up!

Thursday 2/19- Mostly Sunny & COLD – High 10º / Thursday Night – Cloudy and Cold – Low -8º

Record cold temperatures are expected Thursday, as arctic air combines with the current snowpack for highs that will struggle to make it out of the single digits. As if that wasn’t cold enough, even a slight wind will cause wind chills to plummet even further.

These wind chills will be dangerously low for the morning commute, so refrain from being outside for long periods of time. Subzero temperatures will make an appearance once again on Thursday night, with lows falling between -5° and -15°.

Friday 2/20 – Chance of Snow – High 28º / Friday Night – Wintry Mix – Low 28º

After starting out frigid, Bowling Green will actually see a “break” from the record cold on Friday. With a frontal boundary positioning across the southern U.S., winds from the south will bring temperatures back up into the 20s by the afternoon, and near 30° around midnight. The timing of this front will create a seemingly strange trend in the temperatures, as Friday’s high will also be Friday night’s low.

Along with the warming temperatures, Friday night brings the next chance of precipitation. As of right now, this system looks to begin Friday as snow, then change into a snow/sleet wintry mix Friday night. The precipitation will conclude as rain, with temperatures warming far above freezing on Saturday. The model below shows the GFS 3-hour precipitation forecast for Saturday valid at 6 AM. The yellow 5400 line, also known as the rain-snow line, is positioned far above Bowling Green at this projected time.

The timing of this system, as well as the temperature profiles of the atmosphere, will determine the type of precipitation that will fall. We will keep an eye on this system and continue to inform you with future weather updates.
