Earlier today on Good Morning America, two drones gave viewers a spectacular look into the erupting Bardarbunga volcano located in Iceland. This volcano is situated on the largest glacier in Iceland – Vatnajokull – which takes up 10% of the country’s area. Bjorn Oddsson from the National Icelandic Civil Protection joined GMA Meteorologist Ginger Zee and Eric Cheng from DJI onsite at the volcano.
Thank you @DJIGlobal for taking us inside the eruption. Lava field the size of Manhattan. #GMADroneShow pic.twitter.com/kzk7K1mS3A

The lava field – at 85 square miles – is about the size of Manhattan with temperatures reaching up to 2100 degrees Fahrenheit. The crew stayed around one mile out from the volcano, while Cheng and another pilot flew the drones just 380 feet above the center of the volcano. Below is a video that was recorded from the drone earlier this morning:

Near the end of the video, Meteorologist Ginger Zee stresses the importance of drone technology not only for looking into active volcanoes, but also for the study of Meteorology and science as a whole (ABC News).
