Snow Chances Tonight

Real-time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

**UPDATE: The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Allen, Barren, Butler, Edmonson, Logan, Simpson & Warren County through 4am Saturday morning**

This Afternoon – Wintry Mix – 35˚↓ / Tonight – SNOWMAHGAWD – Low 29˚

3pm 35˚ – 6pm 33˚ – 9pm 32˚ -12am 31˚ – 3am 30˚ – 6am 29˚

A wintry mix has plagued south central Kentucky through much of the day, and much of the same can be expected into the early evening.  We’ve already received reports of slick roads north of Bowling Green.

Please travel with caution if you’re out and about…slick roads are nothing to take lightly.

The real “fun” will begin as we progress into tonight…

… “fun”

A low pressure system is currently winding up to our southeast, prepping for a jolt off the Atlantic Coast.  This is illustrated on the model below:

In response to this, northerly winds will drag surface temps closer to freezing, causing our wintry mix to transition to a period of snow showers.

The following HRRR simulated radar model loops every hour from 6pm – 12am tonight.  It should give you a better idea of how this system may behave:

Accumulation (SNOWMAHGAWD) Talk

The latest guidance continues to suggest that we could see minor snow accumulations from tonight’s disturbance.  Anywhere from 14 – 36″  a dusting to ~1″ seems plausible, if anything.  If we’re lucky, we may even squeeze out 2″.  Overall, this won’t be a big snow event.

If you need a speedy computer repair, I know a guy…

My concern regarding accumulation amounts lies with surface temperatures not cooling fast enough, meaning not everything that falls will stick.  How much we see on the ground Saturday morning will not only depend on how quickly temperatures fall, but also how quickly the transition to all snow takes place.  The sooner, the better (if you’re a snow lover like me).

With any winter weather system, it’s easy to get distracted by amounts, when we should focus on sensible weather impacts.  I’m guilty of this myself.  With temperatures below freezing, slick spots will be a concern.  If you must travel tonight into tomorrow morning, please do so with caution.

Lingering snow showers will slide east of the area before dawn, with plentiful amounts of sunshine slated to join highs in the 50s Saturday afternoon.  In other words, if any snow accumulates, it sure won’t be around for long.

That’s all I have for now.  We’ll be updating frequently @WxOrNotBG and @WarrenCountyWx on twitter as we progress through the night.  Have a safe night, and thanks for reading!
