Monday Afternoon Update

This Afternoon – Sunny & Cold – High 28˚ / Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low 23˚

Rays of sunshine will accompany temperatures near 30˚ throughout this afternoon, with light, northwesterly winds creating wind chill values in the mid 20s.  Tonight, temperatures will tumble to the lower 20s, as a few scattered clouds filter in.

Exciting…I know.

Tue – Partly Sunny, Warmer – High 40˚ / Tue Night – Iso’d Snow Showers – Low 23˚

Winds at the surface will shift out of the southwest, resulting in a nice rebound in temperatures.  It won’t be worth digging out your bathing suit over, however, afternoon highs near 40˚ should make for a tolerable day overall.

Latest guidance has hinted at the possibility of a few isolated snow showers making an appearance Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, as a weak system works southeast across the area.  The 4km NAM model below, valid for 3am Wednesday, supports the potential for isolated, frozen precipitation:

Little to no accumulation is expected, however, anything that falls will stick, thanks to the below freezing temperatures.  So…maybe a dusting, if anything.  Regardless, travel carefully on the Wednesday morning commute.

Wed – Iso’d Snow Showers; Blustery – High 23˚ / Wed Night – Clear & FRIGID – Low 2˚(!!!)

A few snow showers will be possible through the early part of the day, however, attention will be focused on the plummeting temperatures that will be taking place.  An Arctic blast of air will infiltrate south central Kentucky from the northwest, bringing us the coldest temperatures we’ve seen this season.

Values in the lower 20s to start the day will be in the low teens by late afternoon.  Temps will continue to tumble after sunset, eventually holding out just above 0˚.  To make matters worse, northwesterly winds are expected to be howling at 10-20+ mph, resulting in the likelihood of SUBZERO wind chill values.

Please prepare accordingly before the frigid air arrives.  Open cabinet doors and close off vents to your crawl space to prevent pipes from bursting Wednesday night into Thursday morning.  Have a secondary source of heat (wood stove, kerosene heater, etc.) in case of power outages, and by all means…if you have pets, bring them indoors.
