Christmas Eve Bowling Green Weather Update

Real-time Bowling Green weather radar:

Christmas Eve – Showers Likely; Windy; Temperatures Decreasing – High 53º / Tonight – Slight Chance of Rain/Snow – Low 35º

Good morning, and Merry Christmas Eve! Warm, wet, and windy are three words that describe today’s forecast. A low pressure system that has been building in the Gulf states began to move northeastward last night and is passing through Kentucky this morning. The presence and progression of this deepening low pressure center will allow for precipitation throughout the day, with a thunderstorm possible early.

The high for today has already occurred this morning, and temperatures will be on the decline as the day goes on. Temperatures, while in the low to mid-50s for the early morning hours, will fall into the 40s for the afternoon due to the passage of a cold front. Sustained winds at the surface will be 10-20 mph throughout the day, with wind gusts up to 30 mph possible. Wind got you feeling like…

Wraparound precipitation is possible tonight, but will taper off soon after midnight. With temperatures decreasing, a chance of snow is possible, but moisture – and therefore precipitation – will be limited. Temperatures at the surface will remain above freezing, so any snow accumulation will be no more than a dusting.

Christmas Day – Mostly Sunny; Seasonable – High 47º / Christmas Night – Mostly Clear – Low 32º

With the upper-level trough (dip in the jet stream) and surface low pressure system lifting off into Canada, Christmas will bring much nicer and calmer weather to the Commonwealth. No “white” Christmas here in Bowling Green, but at least it won’t be a “wet” Christmas. As high pressure and upper-level ridging move into the area, clouds will be clearing and temperatures will reach the mid to upper-40s. Winds will be flowing from the southwest at around 10 mph.

As for Christmas night, much of the same can be expected. Skies will remain mostly clear, and lows will fall into the low 30s overnight. Overall, Christmas will be dry, seasonable, and fairly calm!

Friday, 12/26 – Sunny – High 55º / Fri Night – Mostly Cloudy – Chance of Rain Showers – Low 41º

On Friday, upper-level ridging and surface winds from the south will cause temperatures to once again rise into the 50s. Friday should be a very nice day for traveling, spending time with family, or returning unwanted Christmas gifts back to their place of origin (may the odds be ever in your favor). Plenty of sunshine will be present during the day due to high pressure over the southeastern region of the country.

By Friday night, however, our next disturbance will be making its way toward Bowling Green. An upper-level trough will be deepening out to the west, allowing for a chance of showers late Friday night. Temperatures will remain in the low-40s due to surface winds from the south. These rain chances look to continue into Saturday and Saturday night; more details to come in the next few days.
