Monday Morning Weather Update

Real-Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 12/22 – Mostly Cloudy; Mild; Iso’d PM Showers – High 56º / Tonight – Rain Likely – Low 49º

6am 36º – 9am 44º – 12pm 51º – 3pm 56º – 6pm 53º

Good morning, a period of active weather is set to begin today as two separate areas of low pressure will bring rain chances to the area today through Christmas morning. Currently, a warm front has passed just north of southern Kentucky. This warm front is associated with  an area of low pressure in South Dakota that will jog southeast throughout the day.

Temperatures will quickly rise into the middle 50s by this afternoon thanks to southerly surface winds. As this area of low pressure moves southeast, we will see a few isolated showers begin to impact southern Kentucky by later this afternoon.

These showers will continue overnight as low pressure moves closer to the area. Expect rain throughout most of the night with rainfall amounts of up to 0.25″ possible. Low temperatures will only sink a few degrees as extensive cloud cover will limit the amount of diurnal cooling.

Tuesday 12/23 – Periods of Showers – High 57º / Tues Night – Periods of Showers – Low 47º

Rain showers will continue tomorrow as an associated cold front nears our area from the west. This cold front is then expected to become stationary in central Kentucky as an additional area of low pressure forms over the Gulf of Mexico and begins to send warm air advection into our area again.

Expect periods of showers throughout the day tomorrow under cloudy skies. Cold air advection should stay off to our west which will allow for afternoon high temperatures to reach the middle to lower 50s once more. Total rainfall amounts throughout the day tomorrow are expected to be around 0.25″

Precipitation coverage and intensity will increase by tomorrow night as this second are of low pressure begins to move northeast. Rainfall amounts of 0.25-0.5″ are expected across southern Kentucky overnight.

Christmas Eve – Cloudy; Scattered Showers – High 49º / Wed Night – Mostly Cloudy; Iso’d Rain & Snow Showers – Low 34º

This second area of low pressure will track right across Kentucky on Christmas Eve. An associated cold front will push east across southern Kentucky by mid-morning as surface winds turn to the west. We will begin the day with temperatures in the upper 40s, but these readings will slowly drop throughout the afternoon as colder air moves into the area.

Rain showers will continue throughout the day and by the time all of this rainfall is said and done, southern Kentucky has the potential to see up to 2″ of total rainfall from today through Christmas morning.

Low pressure will continue moving off to the northeast by Wednesday night and we will see some moisture wrap around the low resulting in some isolated rain and snow showers. Latest model guidance suggests southern Kentucky will be just cold enough to support some snow overnight.

Precipitation amounts look light at this time, but a few snow showers could result in at least a coating of snow in some locations. Gusty winds could create some very low visibilities in some of these snow showers. Rudolph’s nose may be needed to guide the sleigh this Christmas Eve.

Will we wake up to some snow on the ground Christmas morning? While a big snow is not expected, it is certainly possible many locations could see a dusting of snow. Be sure to keep up with the latest forecast as model guidance is not in good agreement with the track of this second low yet.
