Winter Solstice Occurs Tomorrow

Even though we are nearly a month into meteorological winter, astronomical (official) winter begins tomorrow at 5:03 PM CST. The winter solstice occurs when the northern hemisphere Earth is at its farthest tilt from the Sun and this phenomena marks the beginning of astronomical winter for locations north of the Equator.

After the winter solstice, we can finally expect daylight to slowly begin increasing, as the Earth begins to tilt towards the Sun. Even though tomorrow is the solstice, today marked the shortest day of the year as the sunrise occurred at 6:55 AM CST and the sunset occurred at 4:32 PM CST leaving us with 9 hours and 37 minutes of daylight today.
