12 Hours of Daylight Today

Today is the autumnal equinox which signifies the official start of fall. While it has been meteorological fall for three weeks, astronomical fall (the season you are used to seeing on calendars) officially begins tonight at 9:29 P.M. CST.

On the autumnal equinox, the Earth is tilted in such a manner that both hemispheres are receiving an equal amount of sunlight. This means that everyone around the world will see close to 12 hours of both sunlight and darkness.

September 22 (Bowling Green):

Sunrise: 6:34 A.M.

Sunset: 6:43 P.M.

Length of Day: 12 hours, 9 minutes

Now that we are entering fall, expect our days to become shorter more quickly as the northern hemisphere tilts away from the sun. One month from now we will have lost an hour of daylight. Our days will continue to shorten until  the Winter Solstice on December 21 where we will only have 9 hours 37 minutes of daylight on the shortest day of the year.
