Tuesday Afternoon Weather Update

Real Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy – High 86° / Tonight – Partly Cloudy – Low 67°

3pm 85º – 6pm 78º – 9pm 74º – 12am 72º – 3am 70º – 6am 67º

Good afternoon, another beautiful afternoon is in progress across southern Kentucky today. Temperatures are currently in the middle 80s but it still feels relatively comfortable outside with dew points in the 60s. Surface high pressure to our southeast is helping to keep the weather quiet today and the latest visible satellite imagery shows mostly clear skies in our area.

Currently, a surface low located in the central Plains is moving to the northeast and an associated warm front will slide northeast over our area tonight. No precipitation is expected with the passage of this frontal boundary, but we could see an increase in cloud cover overnight. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with lows in the upper 60s.

Wednesday 9/10 – Partly Cloudy – High 90° / Wed Night – Scattered Thunderstorms Late – Low 71°

We will see a return of the heat for one day on Wednesday as winds turn to the south behind the warm front. We will be located in the warm sector of the low to our northwest and highs will near 90° during the afternoon. As the low continues to move northeast a surface cold front will begin to move into our area from the northwest.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to form over Illinois and Indiana tomorrow afternoon and slowly sink southeast. This line of storms will weaken once the sun goes down and move into southern Kentucky overnight. Fortunately, the nocturnal timing will help to limit the amount of instability for storms to work with. Marginal wind shear will be in place so we could see some of the stronger storms produce some gusty winds.

Despite the low threat for severe weather, model guidance has been pretty consistent in predicting a solid line of storms that will produce frequent lightning and heavy rain. Check out the latest run of 4km NAM model showing what it thinks the radar will look like at 3am Thursday morning:

Thursday 9/11 – Scattered Shower & Thunderstorms– High 79° / Thur Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 59°

Expect a very wet morning commute on Thursday as the front will be positioned right over southern Kentucky. Additional showers and thunderstorms will continue to impact the area during the morning and early afternoon hours. After the front moves southeast, we will begin to see skies become partly cloudy by Thursday evening. Once all the rainfall is said and none, we could be looking at totals around 1″ from Wednesday night and Thursday’s rain.

Precipitation and cloud cover will hold temperatures in the 70s on Thursday with much cooler air moving in behind the front. Lows will dip down into the upper 50s under partly cloudy skies Thursday night.

Cooler temperatures and pleasant weather will continue for the rest of the week and if you have any outdoor plans this weekend, you’re in luck. High temperatures are expected to be in the 70s on Saturday and Sunday with partly cloudy skies.
