The unsettled weather pattern has arrived as shower and storm chances begin to ramp up for the remainder of this afternoon and evening.  A low pressure system will slide eastward from the Ozarks into southern Kentucky later tonight. Surface warm front will begin lifting northward across the area later providing the forcing needed for development. Furthermore, this forcing mechanism along with upper level support and precipitable water values near the 2.0” mark will bring plenty of scattered showers and storms across southern Kentucky.

Several waves of scattered showers and storms will persist into the evening and overnight hours as lows drop into the upper 60’s. With any development over the course of our Thursday, none is expected to reach severe criteria. However, with an increasingly moist atmosphere, locally heavy rainfall and minor flooding will be our primary threats. Now, in celebration…sing with me.

“Raindrops are falling on my head…”

That’s what I’m talking about!

Fri – Mostly Cloudy; Thunderstorms Likely – High 85º / Fri Night – Mostly Cloudy; Thunderstorms Likely – Low 71º

The aforementioned surface low will ride northeastward along the Ohio River before the front stalls out Friday afternoon. This will provide the best chances for rainfall across southern Kentucky and Bowling Green as several rounds of showers and storms impact the area. Highs will be a tad cooler as temperatures top out in the mid 80’s. Of course, the threat for heavy rainfall will be a major concern tomorrow as minor flooding issues could arise.

Sat – Mostly Cloudy; Thunderstorms Likely – High 86º / Sat Night – Mostly Cloudy, Sct’d Storms – Low 68º

The low pressure system will situate itself across the heart of the Bluegrass as rain sticks around for Saturday. However, portions of central and eastern Kentucky will take the brunt of this precipitation as Bowling Green resides on the backside of the front. But, with a moist air mass in-tact, scattered showers and storms will persist through much of the day with activity tapering off through the evening hours.

The latest precipitation forecast spits out moderate rainfall totals for much of southern Kentucky through Sunday. This is great news considering just how dry we are. It’s very possible that Bowling Green will pick up anywhere from 1-2” of rainfall. While this is no drought buster, it will definitely help our drought situation.
