Muggy With Storm Chances

Real Time Regional Radar:

This Afternoon – Partly Sunny; Stray Shower – High 88º / Tonight – Partly Cloudy; Pleasant – Low 67º

3pm 87º – 6pm 85º – 9pm 79º – 12am 72º – 3am 69º – 6am 67º

After an active weather day yesterday, this afternoon will feature calm and relatively nice conditions. The cold front that brought some much needed rain to the area yesterday continues to work through the Commonwealth as drier air filters across the area.

In return, weak upper level ridging and surface high pressure will continue to dominate our short term weather bringing partly sunny skies and a less muggy feel to the air. A stray shower cannot be completely ruled out as the boundary slides through southern Kentucky. However, I think most of us stay dry for the remainder of the day with a quiet and comfortable night ahead.

Go ahead… Celebrate a little.

Thu – Partly Sunny; Sct’d Storms – High 89º / Thu Night – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Storms – Low 69º

Well, that was fun while it lasted. The same ole same ole pattern makes an abrupt return to southern Kentucky by Thursday. Weak upper level ridging will break down and work eastward as winds turn southerly once again. Yep, you know where this is heading. Warm and muggy conditions swing back in as quick as they left us. Highs will flirt with the 90 degree mark as moisture begins to increase across the region.

Dewpoint temperatures will rise back into the upper 60’s, lower 70’s as the “air you can wear” feel comes right back into play. Latest model data suggest more diurnally driven storms by tomorrow afternoon as temperatures warm and instability rises. The latest NAM simulated reflectivity shows this well and keeps a majority of storm activity along the I-65 corridor and westward.

With that said, we’ll keep scattered chances for shower and storm development through tomorrow afternoon for Bowling Green. Storms are not expected to reach severe potential, but will be capable of producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds and lightning. Look for activity to diminish into the evening hours under partly cloudy skies.

Fri – Partly Sunny; Iso’d Storms – High 90º / Fri Night – Mostly Cloudy; Sct’d Storms – Low 68º

The storm chances will continue across the region for Friday as warm and muggy conditions prevail. A weak surface front will lift northward across the Commonwealth as we crack the 90 degree mark once again in Bowling Green. A southwesterly flow will continue pumping in moisture across the area as precipitable water values jump near 1.8”.

Essentially, this set up will lead to the afternoon boomers as isolated-widely scattered storms develop. Much like Thursday, any storm development is not expected to reach severe potential, but heavy rain, gusty winds, and vivid lightning will certainly be possible.

Storm activity will begin to decrease in coverage Friday night with the loss of daytime heating. Mostly cloudy skies will win out with mild overnight lows in the upper 60’s.
