Strong to Severe Storms Possible Today

Real Time Regional Radar:

——————————————————————————–

Today 6/10 – Scattered Strong/Severe Storms – High 80° / Tonight – Scattered Strong Storms – Low 66°

Today is a pretty tricky forecast for our area. On one side, we could see severe thunderstorms, on another note, we could see nothing but showers. In all honesty, it will depend on morning conditions. If we wake up to cloudy skies and showers, and they stick around for a while, expect the severe threat to go down.

However, if the clouds break and we get some sunshine, we could see instability rise. This, coupled with a decent atmospheric wind field will produce conditions for storms to form. Some of the storms may tap into low level winds, which will lead to predominately a damaging wind threat. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined areas along and east of I-65 in a “slight” risk, but think enhanced.

Be sure to have multiple sources of severe weather information today. Although I don’t think we’ll see widespread severe weather, a few thunderstorms could produce heavy rain, vivid lightning, and damaging wind gusts. Rainfall amounts today could range from .5″ – 1.25″, as depicted by this image from the WPC:

Wednesday 6/11 – Scattered Showers – High 77° / Wed Night – Showers – Low 63°

On Wednesday we’ll see a slow moving cold front push east across the region. Because of the rather slow progression of the front, we’ll likely see showers linger all day across the region. Some of the rain could be heavy at times, so those areas prone to flash flooding will need to monitor those areas. Remember, “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Wednesday night should see some decrease in showers across the region. As the front passes through the region, we can expect to see temperatures fall across the area. We should see lows fall into the lower 60s.

Thursday 6/12 – Partly Cloudy – High 80° / Thur Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 66°

On Thursday, the aforementioned cold front will move completely out of the region, leaving us completely dry. Upper level ridging will push all the moisture to the east of the region. Thus, we’ll see a decrease in cloud coverage throughout the day. We can expect highs to be in the low 80s with sunshine returning to the region.

On Thursday night we’ll continue to see cloud cover decrease as more dry, stable air moves into the region. With the decrease in cloud cover, you can generally expect lows to be in the 60s. Some of the ridging may creep some warmer air into the region, which is preventing me from going with cooler lows.

Watch out, Friday is coming sooner than you think!
