Warm Week Shaping Up

This Afternoon – Partly Cloudy – High 62˚/ Tonight – Iso’d Rain Showers – Low 44˚

I hope everyone is enjoying today’s beautiful weather, as temperatures have warmed to around 60 degrees across south central Kentucky this afternoon. A few high clouds are spreading across the state, which will cut back on the amount of sun we will see, but I’m sure many don’t mind as it’s finally warm enough to lose those jackets.

When it's finally warm enough to lose the jacket...

The clouds will hang around this evening as a cold front approaches from the west. This front is very weak, and will do little to actually lower temperatures, but it does bring a slight chance of showers and maybe a few rumbles of thunder late tonight.

Isolated rain showers  look to overspread the area around midnight, lasting until daybreak Wednesday. Precipitation amounts will be very light and rain amounts are expected to be less than .10″. Cloud cover will keep temperatures from falling too much tonight as the low temperature looks to fall into the middle 40s.

Wed – Partly Cloudy – High 59˚/ Wed Scat’d showers – Low 49˚

Clouds will quickly move east and exit the region on Wednesday, making way for another warm environment. By tomorrow afternoon southerly winds will be advecting in warm air and lots of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Combined with partly cloudy skies, high temperatures will make another run at 60 degrees.

A few clouds may move into the area late on Wednesday as a warm front moves northward over southern Kentucky Wednesday night. The warm front will bring a chance for scattered showers but any rainfall amounts will be light. This warm front will be associated with an area of low pressure over the Southern Plains that will bring us unsettled weather on Thursday as it continues east ward.

Thu – Scat’d showers and T-storms – High – 71˚/ Thu Night – Showers and T-storms – Low – 39˚

After the warm front passes north of us, warm air will continue pumping into southern Kentucky on Thursday with high temperatures reaching around 70 degrees. This warm and moist air mass will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day, with mostly cloudy skies. By Thursday evening, a line of thunderstorms is expected to form along a cold front to our west, and move eastward across the state.

Models are in pretty good agreement of the timing of this line of thunderstorms and it looks to impact us after 6 PM. These thunderstorms will produce moderate rainfall, thunder and lightning, and bring a chance for damaging winds, and even an isolated tornado or two. Currently, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the southeast under a slight risk for severe storms Thursday and Thursday night.

We will continue to monitor the potential for strong to severe storms Thursday evening over the next two days. It is hard to pinpoint precipitation amounts in thunderstorms a few days out, but as of right now South Central Kentucky has the potential to see up to 1″ of rainfall as the line of storms moves through.
