Widespread Rain on the Way

Happy Saturday morning! It’s a foggy start across parts of the WABBLES region and our next weather maker is on the horizon with heavy rain and thunderstorms on the way. A low-pressure system currently over the southern plains is expected to strengthen and lift northeastward bringing a strong cold front across the central and eastern United States.

Temperatures will climb to the mid 60s today as surface wind remains southerly. Some rain showers are possible through the afternoon as moisture increases.

More widespread rainfall will begin Saturday night and continue to increase overnight and throughout the day Sunday. Up to 3″ of rainfall is possible.

Rainfall forecast for Sat-Mon (Weather Prediction Center)

Wind gusts will also increase Saturday and Sunday as pressure falls in response to the approaching cold front, gusting as high as 35mph on Sunday.

Prefrontal wind gusts will approach 35mph Sun-Mon (NCEP)

Some storms on Sunday could be on the strong side. Temperatures will be in the mid 60s again on Sunday but continuous rainfall and widespread cloud cover will limit instability on Sunday, which will limit a threat for organized severe weather. Strong wind profiles could still support a few occurrences of severe wind in the strongest storms. At this time the Storm Prediction Center has WABBLES included in a “marginal risk” for severe storms on Sunday.

While the greatest instability will be South of the WABBLES region, some storms may be strong Sunday. (SPC)

The cold front will pass Sunday night bringing cooler temps for next week. Lingering clouds will hang around for partly sunny skies on Monday and the mid 60s of the weekend will be a thing of the past as highs on Monday will be in the upper 40s.

We’ll be monitoring the rain/storm potential over the WABBLES region so just make sure you have that umbrella handy, and maybe some rain boots, and have a great weekend!
