Winter Weather Advisory Issued

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the entire region from 9 PM tonight to noon on Monday. While temperatures will likely rise a few degrees above freezing, a mix of freezing rain and sleet may develop Sunday night and into Monday morning.

Highs this afternoon will likely top out around 38° under mostly cloudy skies. Rain will begin to move into the region by 7 PM this evening with temperatures dropping to around freezing by 9 PM.

While air temperatures may be above freezing, road and ground temperatures may still be below freezing because objects take longer to warm than air. Thus, a thin layer of ice may develop at the onset of precipitation. Below is the forecast radar imagery from the Hi-Res NAM model.

A glaze of ice over area bridges and roadways may be possible for the Monday morning commute. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet the temperature of pavement on I-65 in Smith’s Grove is 19.7°, which will take a while to warm above freezing. Also, be careful on elevated surfaces, such as steps and decks.

Showers will continue on Monday. However, temperatures will warm to around 40°, which should help melt any ice that forms by the time the afternoon and evening commute rolls around. Lows will remain mild thanks to mostly cloudy skies, only dropping to around 33°. The GFS model say’s our high will be around 37°.

Tuesday will begin a nice and welcomed surge of warmth to the region. A trough is expected to develop along the west coast, which is a break from the recent pattern. The trough will spread warm air into the region from the southwest. Highs will likely top out in the mid 40s.

That warmth really looks to take hold Wednesday and Thursday. Afternoon highs may eclipse the 60° mark both days, which will basically feel like shorts and tee-shirt weather compared to the single digit and teen temperatures we’ve been dealing with.
