Forecast Discussion

Today will mark the beginning of a fairly calm weather pattern that will be in place for the next several days. High pressure leaking out all the way from southern Canada will help keep a frontal boundary well to the south of the region today. That will leave us with northerly surface flow and cooler temperatures. You can expect highs to top out in the mid 50s under partly cloudy skies.

High pressure will increase in intensity of Thursday. This will help push that frontal boundary even farther south of the region. This will also introduce more dry air to the region, leading to mostly sunny skies. Colder air will also move in, leaving us with highs only in the mid 40s, which is about normal for this time of year.

The center of high pressure will continue to track toward the region on Friday. The atmosphere may try to squeeze out a few drops of rain or snowflakes on Friday as a vort max moves north of the region. This is the tendency for air to spin, much like an ice skater. When the ice skater pulls their arms in, the spin gets tighter. The same process is true with a vort max. In front of the vort max, divergence (the spreading of air) is forced, and that creates lift.

However, I think conditions will be too dry for precipitation to form. Therefore, you can expect a bit more cloud cover and highs to top out around the mid 40s once again.

Looking Ahead

Our next big shot at precipitation looks to come on Sunday. A bit of a shortwave trough will move through the region, leading to some showers possible.

Southerly flow looks to be in place early next week, leading to warmer conditions on Monday and Tuesday. Then, a longwave trough will move through the region bringing a better chance of rain with it. Run-to-run inconsistency in the models diminishes confidence in the forecast. 24 hours ago, models were hinting at potential severe weather early next week, but have since backed off that narrative. However, it will be something to watch over the coming week.
