Yesterday’s Bowling Green Weather was…kinda weird, actually. It started off fantastic across the region, as sunny skies dominated and temperatures rose into the mid 50s. It was just a really nice day! Then, on the nose of widespread mid and upper level divergence, strong showers/storms formed to our west, and moved towards us. This led to an evening of precip, and even some isolated reports of hail.

Discussion
This forecast period, but especially today, is really fascinating.
Let me jump right in. Last evening, we had a shortwave trough and associated jet streak push a cold front through the region. This forced some heavy showers and thunderstorms to our west, and then through our region. These had an occasional hail report, but otherwise, nothing too significant was reported here.
Now, what this does to our atmosphere becomes very interesting, especially this evening. This front ushered in a new, cooler air mass into the region. We are currently sitting at 40°F, and northwesterly flow has taken control at all levels of the atmosphere, from the surface to the upper levels.
This sets the central Kentucky region as a whole up for some snow shower/squall activity this evening. There looks to be a pool of low level moisture move into the region as we head into the evening hours.
As this works its way into plentiful northwesterly flow, it will begin to take a bit of a topographically force ascent across the state. Because eastern Kentucky is elevated, the moisture will have a plane to topographically rise across, and thus, the lift necessary to form the precip.
The highest threat for snow squalls and showers is across central and eastern Kentucky, but south-central KY should keep an eye on this. I can tell you one thing for sure: no matter what, I think there is a 100% chance of no school tomorrow.
By Friday morning, most of this should be off to our east, leaving sunny skies in its wake. We’ll be under the influence of a quickly propagating high pressure system that should be in conjunction with convergence in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere.
This will keep our skies mostly sunny, but temps still look a bit cool tomorrow afternoon. Now, as we head into the big day, the weather looks kinda cruddy.

A shortwave will be moving into the region, with favorable upper level divergence. This will combine, with a surface front, to produce precipitation across the region Saturday afternoon and evening. It won’t be a terrible washout by any means, but it’ll be cooler and light rain will be falling, making it just nasty.
Luckily, though, fireworks don’t care too much! So still set them off, have a NYE watch party, and just enjoy time with friends and family. Don’t forget to sing Auld Lang Syne, as well!
