Forecast Discussion

Bah, humbug. That’s what the Bowling Green Weather has got me feeling like during this festive holiday weekend. Christmas is supposed to be…well, maybe not snowy but at least cold! Not even close this year.

Our next system is working it’s way here as we speak and clouds will thicken up throughout the day today as it approaches. Showers will overspread the region overnight and into the early morning hours, and thanks to those clouds, temperatures will drop very little if at all.

The bulk of this rain will fall during the overnight and early morning hours. The rain may hang tough with scattered showers lingering even through the afternoon, so keep that in mind if you’re going out (say, if you’re headed out for any last minute second shopping!).

Lower shower chances remain for Christmas Eve night, so Santa might wanna keep that poncho around, just in case. Christmas Day itself looks almost…toasty, and I’m not talking about in your house.

Christmas will be spent in between storm systems as the next disturbance gains strength out in the plains, where they have a shot at some strong storms. Around here, though, that means a mostly to at times partly cloudy day with surging temperatures. I’m talking record highs in jeopardy here!

According to NWS Louisville, the record high on Christmas Day in Bowling Green is exactly 70ºF set in 1982. If we see enough clearing, we could make a serious run at that record and that will be something to watch…after opening presents of course. (Fun fact, 2 other NWS climate sites, Lexington and Frankfort, also recorded a record high of 70ºF that day. The More You Know💫)

After an overall pleasant Christmas Day, the next system moves in during the day on Monday, giving us a stout chance for rain to start the new workweek.

Today’s Key Points

  • Clouds increase during the day on Friday.
  • Rain begins late Friday night and sticks around through Christmas Eve.
  • Christmas is going to be warm, with highs approaching records.
  • Another rain chance moves in early next week.

That just about does it for me! Thanks for checking into WxOrNotBG this morning, and be sure to follow @WxOrNotBG and @WKUweather on Twitter and like Landon Hampton on Facebook for the latest Bowling Green Weather information. Hope you have a terrific Friday and a Merry Christmas!
