Real-time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Yesterday’s Weather

Holy moly…how does one describe the best weather day since the spring? I’m not even sure. Yesterday was so nice. It was cloudy, showery and cool outside. That absolutely describes some pretty perfect weather, in my opinion.

Discussion

Holy cow, how nice is this weather about to be??

I am just so happy about this week. A cold front came a-knockin’ yesterday morning, and it hit Summer-like weather with a swift uppercut, and here we are, currently in the 50s, with highs forecast in the 70s.

I have been anticipating something like this for quite a while, and am so happy it has finally occurred across the region. The overall atmospheric set up is very complicated this week, so I wanna discuss it a bit!

The toughest player to forecast this week is something called a “Cutoff low”. This occurs when a low pressure system in the low and mid levels of the atmosphere digs too deeply, and is literally cut off from the main flow/jet stream. These are often difficult to forecast, but tend to result in cooler temps, rainfall and cloudiness. The cutoff low that we are dealing with is currently sitting over southern Canada/northern Michigan, and is forecast to dig into the southern Ohio Valley over the next couple days.

Today, we won’t be seeing any effects from this, really. Today looks like it’ll be mostly sunny, with highs jumping right into the mid 70s. That will be nice, and if you can find anytime to be outside today, you should absolutely try to do it!

Overnight, look for clouds to increase towards early morning, but nothing too crazy. Lows in the lower 50s. Tomorrow and Thursday are when everything goes down with the cutoff low.

The cutoff low looks to really dig towards us, and bring along with it a strong vorticity maximum (a lifting mechanism). This will likely create a band of showers that moves towards us, but I also anticipate showers lingering into the afternoon after that passes.

Thursday should see similar conditions, as the cutoff low continues to look to produce clouds, showers and cooler weather around it. Look for highs both days to be in the mid and upper 60s, and that might be generous. Clouds will be common, keeping things cool. The overnight periods look to feature cloudy skies, showers and lows in the lower 50s.

Extended Outlook

The long term is likely in a great limbo at this point. Considering how poorly the models handled this week’s weather last week, I can’t really trust much beyond 3-4 days out. However, don’t worry about that. The cutoff low looks to impact our weather into the early weekend, so enjoy the nice weather that we have currently!
