If you could win the lottery in hot and humid days, I think we would have won by now. Highs topped out in the lower 90s, but with dewpoints as high as they were, it felt terrible outside.

I am really, really excited about the end of this week for weather.
It has been so hot recently that even just shots of cooler weather get me excited for Fall. The atmospheric pattern is looking to become fairly amplified over the next few days, as a deep trough develops across the Pacific Northwest and western US. The ridge that has been keeping us so hot looks to be moving westward and weakening with time, allowing for a trough to dig around a ridge setting up across the northern Great Plains region.
This is setting us up well for a nice cool down. Today, what is left of the ridge that was previously so dominant will be propagating through the region, bringing another day of fairly intense heat to the region.
I don’t think we’ll see any relief in the form of showers or thunderstorms, so expect highs to reach the lower 90s. Combine that with dewpoints in the 70s, and today is gonna feel awful again.
Overnight tonight, look for mostly clear skies across the region, with lows in the lower 70s. Tomorrow is when stuff begins to get interesting.
The trough over the west coast will begin to dig in deep, and will further amplify the ridge of high pressure to our west across the northern Great Plains. As a sharp shortwave trough rounds the apex of the ridge, it will begin to force a deep trough to form, and move southeastward across the eastern US.
Essentially, this will be the point of relief during the last week days. One last day of heat will be tomorrow, as highs get into the upper 80s with increasing clouds throughout the day. I can’t rule out and isolated shower/storm as the trough approaches us on Wednesday evening/night, but I don’t think it will be widespread.
Overnight, look for mostly cloudy skies and isolated showers, with lows in the upper 60s.
Thursday is the day we will finally see relief!
I am very excited about it. We will be firmly entrenched within the trough’s grip, leading to cooler temps, lower dewpoints and sunny skies! The walk to classes on Thursday shouldn’t be too bad for anyone on Campus, as highs look to reach the lower 80s with lowering dewpoints through the day.
Overnight, look for clear skies, with lows in the upper 50s.
Extended Outlook
The extended is a bit tough to analyze right now because the pattern is looking to become a bit more active, even if we don’t see that in the form of troughs over the next week or so. The trough that looks to affect us on Friday will likely be out of here by Sunday, leaving room for a ridge to build in across the region. Beyond that, it is tough to say, because the positioning of a strong ridge will be one of the drivers of our weather.
