Forecast Discussion

A fairly easy-going weather pattern is shaping up in the near term as a ridge begins to build across the southern United States. However, an embedded trough will make today and tomorrow a little more on the complicated side.

According to the NAM, Hi-Res NAM, and HRRR models, isolated showers and thunderstorms form in the vicinity of a weak upper level low pressure system located over the region. I believe showers and thunderstorms may be possible today, although these should remain widely scattered. Thus, not everyone will get some rain.

Coverage of thunderstorms may increase on Tuesday as weak shortwave disturbances move along the Ohio River. No severe weather is expected at this time due to lack of time for favorable thermodynamics to form. An isolated strong storm or two is possible though.

The ridge will be pretty firmly in place, and strongest on Wednesday. This will continue to push jet stream flow to the northern third of the United States. Very little is expected on Wednesday besides heat. With a stronger ridge in place, temperatures will likely settle into the low 90s, with heat indices around 100° likely with the humid airmass in place. If an isolated storm does form in the heat of the afternoon, then it could be quite strong. However, monitor later forecasts for more information. Definitely a wait and see forecast.

Extended Outlook

Expect that ridge to continue and even amplify next week. This will generally lead to a chance of higher than normal temperatures, as well as drier conditions across the region. I’ll take the dry, but I’m no fan of the heat. 🙁
