Winter Storm & Weekend Forecast

***Winter Storm Warning in effect until 6am Saturday***

Real-Time Bowling Green Radar

Today 1/22 – Freezing rain -> Heavy Snow – High 30/Tonight – Snow tapering off – Low 26

Good morning, Bowling Green! This has been a crazy weather week with a snow system Wednesday and now a very dangerous winter storm moving through today. We’ll pretty much see it all with this system as it will have started out as freezing rain last night and will soon transition to snow.

GFS Precipitation Type/Rate valid 6am Friday (Pivotal Weather)

Jacob broke down the synoptic analysis very well last night, but to reiterate, a deep upper-level trough, along with forcing in the mid-levels, and a strong surface low pressure aided to the set-up of this snow-maker system. Snow totals look like they could be between 6-10 inches across the area with some places seeing as much as a foot of snow! Wind will also be a contributing factor to the hazardous conditions today with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Transportation will be severely impacted by this system and driving anywhere will be a nightmare. I hope you got your milk and bread yesterday because it will be practically impossible today! Good news is, snow should start to taper off overnight making for a calm rest of the weekend.

Saturday 1/23 – Mostly cloudy & windy – High 32/ Saturday Night – Partly cloudy – Low 12

Saturday will be relatively quiet compared to Friday, but snow depths will still be very impressive and likely won’t melt much due to cloudy skies and temperatures remaining near freezing. High pressure will move into the region and northerly winds will bring very cold air into southern Kentucky Saturday night.

Surface analysis valid 3pm Saturday (Pivotal Weather)

Temperatures will start warming after Saturday as the high pressure moves eastward and winds become more southerly.

Sunday 1/24 – Sunny – High 34/Sunday Night – Partly cloudy – Low 25

The sun might actually make an appearance Sunday thanks to the high pressure being centered over the region. Highs will be a little warmer which might help some of the snow melt off, but if we get as much snow as forecasted, it will be sticking around for quite a while.

It looks like the work week will be calm as well with only slight rain chances and temperatures slightly warmer than what we’ve been seeing. Stay safe during this winter storm and please avoid getting out if it is unnecessary!
