Crazy Colors in Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert in Chile is most commonly known as the driest place on Earth. Typically, this arid desert is very dry, dusty, and lacks the ability to sustain many plants and/or flowers. Well, not this year! The Atacama Desert is bursting with color and beautiful Malva (or Mallow) flowers! Check out some of the pictures below!

The reason all these flowers are blooming? It seems obvious, but increased rain brought by the El Niño has allowed these beautiful flowers to blossom. The Capital Weather Gang explained in a recent article that these flowers bloom about every 5 to 7 years, but have blossomed especially large because of the increased amounts of rain. Basically, these flowers are taking full advantage of the rain and are incredibly beautiful this year!
