Chilly Bowling Green Weather

Real Time Bowling Green Weather Radar:

Today 4/23 – Partly Cloudy; Breezy – High 62° / Tonight – Partly Cloudy; Frost Possible – Low 39°

It appears a chilly day is on tap for the region today. Mid to upper level atmospheric ridging will bring us northerly flow in the low to mid levels, keeping our temperatures on the cool side compared to temperatures associated with southerly flow (more on that later).

The northerly flow will also keep moist air from advecting into the region from the south and southwest of us, thus we should see partly cloudy skies much like we saw yesterday. Highs will be at or around 62°. The wind will be breezy, sustained around 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 to 25 mph.

Tonight will bring partly cloudy skies to the area once more, with lows in the upper 30s.  Frost will be possible, so be sure to keep sensitive vegetation protected.

Friday 4/24 – Isolated Thunderstorms – High 65° / Fri Night – Scattered Showers – Low 56°

*Frost Advisory from 2am to 8am Friday for Barren & Edmonson County*

The ridge will continue to slowly move across the region from west to east on Friday. A trough located over the southwestern United States will begin to lift to the north, spreading some divergence across the region. This will enhance some lift across the region.

Because of this, I expect partly cloudy skies for much of the day on Friday. However, an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm may develop in response to the lifting from the divergence aloft. Severe weather is not likely. Highs will be around the 65° mark across the region.

More widespread showers and thunderstorms may form to the west of the region throughout the day on Friday. These will slowly spread into south-central Kentucky during the evening and overnight hours. Lows will be around the mid 50s.

Saturday – Warm; Breezy; Stormy – High 77° / Sat Night – Thunderstorms Likely – Low 50°

A more interesting than previously thought forecast is shaping up for Saturday. The aforementioned trough will move into the region during the morning hours. A moderately-strong jet streak will develop across the region. This will enhance divergence aloft, allowing for better lift to be established across the region.

This upper level disturbance will move a surface low pressure system to the north of the region, with an east to west orientated cold front draped to the north as well. This will place Bowling Green in a broad warm sector. Southerly winds will surge warm, moist air into the region. Conditions will be windy, with gusts as high as 25 to 30 mph. Highs will soar into the upper 70s under partly cloudy skies in the afternoon.

This should allow for sufficient instability, which could lead to strong thunderstorm initiation along and ahead of the cold front. A few thunderstorms could be strong to severe with damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes being the threat. Vivid lightning and heavy rain will also be possible in any thunderstorms that form.

It’s worth noting that the latest convective outlook from the SPC has included all of south central Kentucky in a ‘Slight Risk’ for severe weather Saturday:

Thunderstorms will remain possible until the front has cleared the region during the overnight hours. Lows will be in the low 50s across the region.
