ANOTHER Winter Storm Watch Issued

This Afternoon 2/19 – Sunny & COLD – High / Tonight – Partly Cloudy & Very COLD – Low -9°

Our bitterly cold conditions are slated to stick around for a while longer. The vast majority of the main roads are in fairly decent shape at this point, however, back roads are still in bad shape.  Ample sunshine will join us through the remainder of today, with clouds slated to increase as we get into the night.  It will be very cold once again.  Our forecast low for tonight is -9°.

At this point, you’re definitely not the only one who has that feeling.

Low pressure south of the region will overspread plentiful moisture into the Ohio and Tennessee Valley Friday. Snow showers will develop during the afternoon hours.  Keep in mind…our Winter Storm Watch goes into effect at 2pm.

A few snow showers could be moderate to heavy in intensity, leading to reduced visibility. We’ll be much warmer than today, as highs top out around 27°.  The 4km NAM simulated radar loop below is valid from 3pm – 9pm Friday.  It should give you a better idea of how this may behave:

Friday evening and night will bring a wintry mess to south central Kentucky. A warmer air mass will filter into the region; we’ll actually continue warming through the night, transitioning the snow to a mix.  This is expected to continue into Saturday morning, before a transition to all rain occurs.

Before the all rain transition, additional snow/sleet accumulations of a dusting to 2″ will be possible.  A few locations could see up to 3″.  Ice accumulations could approach .10-.20″.  Travel conditions look to be a nightmare late Friday afternoon through early Saturday.  Please, if possible, stay off the roads…

“SHEW!”

This is definitely a more “classic” setup for winter storms in the Ohio Valley.  The “freeze line” will be cutting right across central Kentucky, making this forecast a pain.  Adjustments will be made accordingly, so please check back in for updates here on the blog.

Saturday 2/21 – Wintry Mix to Rain; Warmer – High 34° / Sat Night – Rainy – Low 51°↑

Saturday will bring warmer conditions to the area, which should bring all precipitation down as rain by mid morning.  Until that point in time, however, travel will be an issue, with plenty of snow and ice on the roads.  Regardless, it’s going to be wet.  Very wet.  The graphic below was produced by the Louisville National Weather Service, and lays out precipitation types for Saturday:

Total rainfall amounts are expected to range between 1-3″.  Warmth will continue to overspread the region from southerly flow at the surface through Saturday afternoon. Highs will top out in the mid 30s.  With the given snowpack and expected heavy rainfall, flooding issues could result.  Please be weary of this threat.

Temperatures will continue to increase Saturday evening & night, meaning. Again, the low will simply be the temperature at 6 AM on Sunday. In this case, the low will be 51°. A few claps of thunder may be possible as well.

As we always say, be sure to follow @WxOrNotBG and @WarrenCountyWX for the latest weather information for south central Kentucky. Bundle up and have a great rest of your Thursday!
