Winter Storm Recap

How bout that ride in??

“How bout that ride in??”

The winter storm that hit south central Kentucky today was nothing short of impressive.  Heavy snow started around 2:30am, laying down 1-2″ by 4am.  By 8am, many across the area already had 5+” on the ground.

You’re telling me…

By the time it was all said and done, snow totals ranged between 9-12+” across the region, with higher totals across other portions of the state.  This triggered Governor Beshear to issue a State of Emergency across the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky this afternoon.

This will definitely be a day that goes into the record books for significant snowfall.  The last time Bowling Green experienced a snowfall greater than 8″ was back on February 3 – 4, 1968!  Today’s official tally for Bowling Green was 9.4″.

Here’s a look at preliminary snowfall amounts from NWS Louisville:

Below is a map showcasing our forecast from yesterday, along with actual reports from today.  Overall, I was very pleased with our forecast (PS: nicely done, @jacobwilkinswx), and how things turned out.  The values that are circled are our forecasted amounts.  The numbers that are not circled are an average of the reports we received from said locations:

Ok, let’s get back to looking into the future.  After this significant snowfall, what’s next?  For starters, very light on/off snow and sleet will continue overnight, becoming more sparse as we get into the predawn hours of Tuesday.  A mix of sun and clouds will allow highs to top out in the mid 20s through the second day of the work week.

We’ll be in for another round of fun Tuesday night into Wednesday.  A sharp front will dive southeast across the area, dragging in yet another shot of frigid Arctic air.  Aside from light, on & off snow showers through this time period, we’ll be dealing with even colder temperatures.  Early morning lows on Wednesday will be in the single digits; afternoon highs will only make it to the mid teens.  But wait…it get’s better (worse).

Cold air will continue to overwhelm the area, allowing for the “bottom to drop out” on our temp values.  Low temps are expected to shatter records around sunrise on Thursday and Friday morning.  Thursday morning looks like our coldest day, with values plummeting to -5 to -10˚F.

I’ve been called worse…believe me.

Although not as cold, Friday morning will still be teeth-chattering, bottoming out just below 0˚F.  Rain and snow chances return Friday afternoon, lasting into the start of the weekend.

No. Luke doesn’t see any signs of spring.

That’s it for the time being.  We’ll have plenty of recap posts up tomorrow.  We’ll include some of the insane number of photos/videos you all of you sent us!  We greatly appreciate all your reports, and want to say thanks!  You make life much easier.  Have photos you’d like to see shared?  Send them to @WxOrNotBG.  Have a great night, and by all means, avoid travel if possible.  Stay safe!
