Good Saturday morning, Bowling Green!

For those WKU students reading this, congratulations on making it through the first week of spring classes! Even if you’re not a student at WKU, congrats on making through the week; the weekend has finally arrived, and that is a reason to celebrate.

Along with the arrival of the weekend, high pressure settled into the region last night, allowing for calm conditions. Because of this, our Saturday will begin with mostly sunny skies; it will not stay this way, however, as clouds will be on the increase throughout the day. Skies will become mostly cloudy by the late afternoon.

As a low pressure system forms to our west, temperatures will be on the rise here in Bowling Green. With warm air entering our area from the south, temperatures will make it well into the 40s, and even close to 50° depending on how strong the advection of warm air becomes. With the approaching system, precipitation will come into play beginning Saturday night. As lows will remain in the mid-30s, rain looks to be the predominant precipitation type. However, depending on if temperatures shift, a wintry mix is not out of the question. Any precipitation Saturday night will be fairly light and isolated.

Sunday 2/1 – Rain – High 51º / Sunday Night – Rain & Snow Showers Likely; Cold – Low 25º

As for Super Bowl Sunday, the snow chances we were hoping for earlier this week have all but diminished (they’re still in our hearts). The low pressure system bringing the aforementioned precipitation will be tracking far too close to our area, causing temperatures to become too warm for snow. Any light wintry mix we had overnight will quickly transition to rain and will increase throughout the day Sunday. Around an inch of rainfall is expected during the height of the event.

Temperatures Sunday could reach into the 50s before a cold front swings through Sunday night. As the low pressure moves eastward, surface winds will shift to the northwest, allowing cold air to spill into the region. Temperatures will fall below freezing, but will lag behind the deepest moisture.

Because of this lag, scattered snow showers with only minor accumulations will fall after midnight. Below is a weather model depicting precipitation at midnight Sunday night (Monday morning). The yellow 5400 line, also known as the rain/snow line, cuts through the state after the bulk of the precipitation has already moved eastward.

Monday 2/2 Partly Sunny – High 32º / Friday Night – Partly Cloudy – Low 24º

With cold air pouring into the region and winds flowing from the northwest, wind chills will become a factor Monday morning. High pressure will reenter our area, allowing for a dry – but cold – start to the workweek. Temperatures look to flirt right around the freezing mark under partly sunny skies. Temperatures will fall into the 20s once again Monday night, with winds becoming calm.
