Rain Chances Tonight & Thursday

This Afternoon – Sunny & Mild – High 44˚ / Tonight – Increasing Clouds – Low 36˚

High pressure has made for sunny, mild conditions across south central Kentucky this afternoon.  Cloud coverage will begin to increase tonight, thanks to a low pressure clipper system sliding east across the Great Lakes.  The GFS model below is valid for midnight tonight.  It should give you a good idea of how this system may behave:

This will force an associated cold front to approach the area from the northwest, increasing southerly flow and moisture parameters across the region.

Thu 1/29 – Scat’d Showers; Breezy – High 50º / Thu Night – Chance of Showers Early – Low 29º

As the low pressure system continues to track east over the Great Lakes, light precipitation will fall beginning early Thursday morning.  The 4km NAM simulated radar model supports the idea of rain chances by 7am Thursday morning:

With wet roads possible, take your time on the morning commute.  Remember the golden rule: ‘Wipers On, Lights On!’  Temperatures will be fairly warm Thursday, with highs dancing around 50°, thanks to stout, southerly winds of 15-25mph. A cold front will swing through Thursday afternoon, causing winds to shift out of the the northwest and cooler temperatures flow in behind.

As precipitation ends Thursday evening and colder temperatures filter in, there’s a slight chance that lingering precipitation may transition to snow late. After analyzing the latest model trends, I’m not expecting any accumulation. Temperatures will fall into the upper 20s/lower 30s Thursday night…

Fri 1/30 – Mostly Sunny – High 39º / Fri Night – Partly Cloudy; Colder – Low 25º

High pressure makes a return on Friday, allowing mostly sunny skies and dry conditions to prevail once again. Temperatures will remain fairly chilly, as cold air and winds from the northwest continue to flow and prevent highs from making it out of the upper 30s. Lows will bottom out at around 25° Friday night.

Wintry Weather Possible This Weekend

Our next chance at wintry precipitation comes into play Saturday night and Sunday.  The latest guidance swings a system east across the Tennessee Valley, with temperatures slated to be flirting right around the freezing threshold of 32˚.  We’re still 4-5 days out, so nothing is set in stone.  With that being said, it’s worth taking a mental note of the upcoming potential for wintry weather.

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this disturbance, so be sure and check back as it continues to evolve (my apologies for no apocolyptic-esque 5 day snowfall accumulation map…that’s not how we roll).

That’s all I’ve got for the Wednesday afternoon update.  As always, follow @WarrenCountyWX and @WxOrNotBG for the latest weather info! Until next time… Ciao!
