Weather Challenge Resumes Monday

The Weather Challenge resumes on Monday. The Weather Challenge is a nationwide forecasting competition that features some of the brightest minds in the weather business. From freshmen in college to folks with their doctoral degree in meteorology, their forecasting abilities are put to the test.

The Weather Challenge is made up of 4 cities per semester where the forecaster must enter the high temperature, low temperature, precipitation amount, and highest sustained wind speed for their forecast day. The amount of variation from the observed value results in a score for the day. Points are added if the forecaster misses a forecast or prefers only model guidance. The lowest score wins, because the lowest score is the most correct forecast.

All of the contributors to the blog are participants of the Weather Challenge and have done fairly well in the contest. There are currently over 1700 participants in the Weather Challenge and three of our five contributors rank in the top half of the competition, two of which are in the top 500. I know it has made me a much better forecaster and will continue to do so.

We will continue to take strides to participate in events such as these to bring you the most accurate weather forecast in the region.
