Today is gonna be really weird. Its almost as if the atmosphere has caught some holiday magic, and is about to deliver a dose of really weird Christmas weather. When looking over the models for this forecast, I have just become perplexed and amazed at the atmosphere for this timeframe. So many cool things happen that its hard to keep it simple. So I will try: the high for today will be the low for tonight as well.

I know, I am crazy. However, it is true! What is happening is really something I haven’t seen in a while. We have two separate piece of energy in the mid levels of the atmosphere, and the southern one will begin to induce a low to our south on Tuesday afternoon and into the evening. This low will begin to deepen as the day goes on, and will throw some rain showers at us as the day goes on.

Look for southerly winds to begin to increase as the day goes along, especially into the night. This will begin to advect higher temps into the area, and due to cloud cover to during the day I think we see our high during the late evening hours. I don’t think rain will be a significant problem until Tuesday evening, but when it comes, it’ll likely be heavy. Thunder also will be a possibility going into the night.

Wednesday, 12/24: Morning rain and thunder. Windy, with a high of 63ºF. Wed. night: Showers exiting. Low of 35ºF. Windy.

Wednesday looks just as weird as today does. With the southern low intensifying pretty fast to our south, and moving directly north over the state, it is looking like much of the state east of I-65 will be firmly within a warm sector. Because of this, highs look to spike to the low 60s, and that may be an underestimate. Some spots in eastern KY may see the 70s before the front passes.

As with all strong lows, look for winds to be very strong through much of the day. We will be seeing sustained winds in the order of 15-20 mph, with higher gusts possible.

This is a gulf low pressure system, so rain is looking likely, at the very least widespread Wednesday morning. As the front approaches, I think there is a decent shot that we see a line of showers, and maybe thunderstorms that pushes across the area.

Now, this will be a dynamic low pressure system that moves through, so could the line tap some of the wind energy aloft? Maybe, and if so, that would likely mean some strong winds. We’ll have to see.

The hi-res NAM is showing a line of showers developing. Thunderstorms? Strong winds? Maybe. h/t wxbell

You will know when the cold front passes, as there looks to be a stronger burst of wind associated with it. Winds could be bumped up into to 25 mph sustained range, and maybe even 30 mph! This will begin a very quick drop in temps, but not too far. They only look to drop into the mid 30s at lowest by Christmas morning. Overall, Santa’s ride is looking rough!

Christmas Day – Cloudy, isolated rain/snow showers; breezy – High of 42º / Christmas Night – Clouds decreasing a bit. Low of 30ºF.

Merry Christmas!!

Christmas is looking just plain nasty. With the low pressure system exiting to our north, we are looking at being stuck in a northwesterly flow, which will keep moisture trapped and temps low across the region. It looks to be a bit breezy, and with the clouds and moisture in place across the region, look for isolated showers as you open gifts and spend time with your family.

Highs look to top out in the upper 30s and lower 40s, and much like the last few weeks, you will really wonder why it is so cloudy during such a wonderful time of the year. It has kept me out of the Christmas spirit, honestly.

Overall, Santa is looking like he is gonna have to take a vacation after this one. It is looking really, really rough for his travels on Christmas eve! He surely won’t cancel, but he won’t come here to see a white Christmas, that is for sure. This may be my last post before Christmas, so I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas, and enjoys time with their families.
